Urine Flow Study Overview

Urine flow studies are conducted as a diagnostic screening procedure to determine and calculate the flow rate of urine. The study is most commonly referred to as uroflowmetry. This test is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that calculates the amount and rate of urine, as well as the length of time it takes for someone to completely empty their bladder. The urine flow study is conducted in the office by having the patient urinate into a “funnel” that is connected to a measuring device. The physician conducting the test can then chart and interpret the urine flow and determine if an underlying problem such as an infection, disease, incontinence, etc. might be a reason why the bladder is not emptying properly.
