Glomerulosclerosis is a term used to describe scarring of the blood vessels (the glomeruli) responsible for filtering blood within the kidney. The condition can occur in children or adults and is usually the result of a kidney condition or from diabetes. The primary symptom of glomerulosclerosis is a high level of protein in the urine that will need to be verified and tested by a physician. A person with this condition might experience swelling in the ankles or bloating from fluid in the abdomen. Special treatments such as immunosuppressant drugs, dialysis and a strict diet can be prescribed. In some cases, a kidney transplant might be needed if the scarring is severe thus permanently damaging the kidney.
