An Overview of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

Assisted reproductive technologies is a generalized term referring to the varying methods in which a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm are managed and thus used in order to attain pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial means. During an ART procedure, intercourse is bypassed and the fertilization process is performed in the gynecological office or lab. For most women, one out of every three ART procedures will result in the birth of a baby. While there are many different ART procedures that have been performed over time, the most common and most successful procedure today is Invitro Fertilization (IVF). Although this procedure is very expensive, the number of cases of IVF continues to rise each year.
