Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) Overview

An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is an X-ray test that examines the kidneys, the urinary bladder and the ureters so that a radiologist can view and assess the urinary anatomy. During an IVP examination, a patient is injected with a dye called contrast material through an IV in the arm. Kidney X-ray pictures are then taken at varying intervals exposing the organs so that diseases of the urinary tract (such as tumors, kidney stones or an infection) can be determined. The procedure is non-invasive and is performed on an outpatient basis.
