An Overview of Varicocelectomy

The term varicocele describes an abnormal entanglement or enlargement of the vein that resides in the scrotum that exists to drain the testicles. A varicocele is the most common testicle disorder associated with male infertility. The surgical removal of a “varicose” vein of this nature located in the scrotal sac is called a varicocelectomy. The procedure is typically performed so that a man’s fertility can be improved and/or restored. A varicocelectomy is achieved with a small incision made to the abdomen near the area where the testicles originally descended through the abdominal wall. The veins that are causing the varicocele to occur are essentially cut out so that blood flow can be restored.
