An Overview of Calypso Radiation Therapy

If you live in the Plano, Frisco and Dallas, Texas area and are considering radiation therapy to treat your prostate cancer, it is very important to understand the benefits of utilizing Calypso® Radiation Therapy.  Since organ motion can present challenges to delivering precise external beam radiation to the prostate, GPS for the Body® is a preferred method for providing guidance to clinicians managing patients receiving radiation therapy treatments for prostate cancer. Dr. Mark Allen offers this innovative prostate cancer treatment in his urology practice.

How does Calypso Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Work?

The Calypso® 4D Localization System™ facilitates accurate target localization for maximum clinical confidence.

The implanted Beacon® electromagnetic transponders work with the Calypso® 4D Localization System™ to provide guidance to the clinician on the position and movement of the prostate during radiotherapy.  Clinicians use the motion data to guide radiation therapy setup and monitor the prostate position during treatment delivery.

The implanted Beacon® transponders and the Calypso Radiation Therapy system provide the clinician continuous, real-time monitoring of the prostate and alerts the clinician when the target is outside of acceptable boundaries due to organ motion, thereby enabling corrections during treatment delivery — GPS for the Body®. The implanted Beacon® transponders and the Calypso System also provide objective guidance that enables the clinician to manage organ motion and the opportunity for expanded treatment delivery options.  In addition, clinician confidence is enhanced through accurate sub-millimeter electromagnetic localization accuracy and additional non-ionizing radiation doses are not needed.¹

What is GPS for the Body® Technology?

Actual prostate motion demonstrating drifting of the prostate during treatment up to 1cm for more than 2 minutes.

The Beacon® electromagnetic transponders and the Calypso® 4D Localization System™, referred to as GPS for the Body®, is a system that provides an innovative solution for target localization and monitoring during radiation therapy delivery.

The Calypso® 4D Localization System™ displays and records prostate motion—continuously in real-time—through an intuitive graphical user interface.  Clinicians use the visual and audio cues to manage prostate motion when the organ moves outside of the thresholds set by the radiation department.
