Orchiectomy Overview
An orchiectomy is a process in which the testicles are surgically and permanently removed. This alternative procedure is performed in order to stop the production of testosterone—the male hormone—for the purpose of slowing the hormone within the body so that prostate cancer cannot grow (prostate cancer typically thrives off of this hormone). Sudden side effects from this hormone will occur after surgery, including but not limited to sterility, loss of sexual interest, breast growth, weight gain and trouble attaining an erection. This testicle removal procedure is not for everyone and thus, many men choose to take medicines or injections in order to slow the hormone growth rather than undergo surgery.
