Prostatitis Overview

The prostate gland is an organ that resides just below a male’s bladder and is responsible for making part of the fluid that makes up semen. The prostate gland begins in young men as the size of a walnut and naturally increases in size as a man ages. Prostatitis occurs when there is an inflammation of the prostate gland and for any man that experiences this condition, a great deal of pain is a common side effect. Although the exact causes of prostate inflammation are unknown, certain bacteria entering the prostate have been shown to be the primary culprit(s). An intense urge to urinate, burning pain while urination occurs, difficulty in starting the urination stream and a persistent throbbing pain in the region of the penis are the symptoms of this condition. Prostatitis can usually be treated with a round of antibiotics.
